LANDSCAPING HINTS

Now is a good time to prune deciduous trees while the trees are dormant and the leaves have fallen (finally), so if you didn't do this in December now is a good time to get it done, especially before the buds swell.

Dormant sprays are used to control over-wintering mites and insects on deciduous trees, CAUTION, trees with leaves still on them could become damaged. The dormant spray works by covering the bodies of insects and mites and actually suffocating them. There are a number of sprays available and your licensed, landscape professional can choose one that is recommended to treat the trees in question. To properly control them high pressure, high volume equipment is needed. The professional you choose should at a minimum have a maintenance gardener license issued by the Department of Agriculture and he must be doing the landscape maintenance. If he or she is hired specifically for pest control they must have a Qualified Applicator Certificate (Brown Card) and carry insurance.

Crabgrass control is just around the corner and an application mid-month of Dimension will ensure you don't miss the window of opportunity. In the meantime a healthy well-fed lawn is more resistant to disease and crabgrass. Nitra-King and Turf Royal are still the better fertilizers to use at this time. Don't forget you have to water these in to avoid burning your turf.

UPDATE OF NEW CONSTRUCTION

Dave Norvell from Pardee Homes met with the Board at the January meeting and gave an overview of new construction for the Sabre Springs area. Some of the items being considered are a new hotel, restaurants and a luxury apartment complex.

ANNUAL TIPS

Chimney flues and dryer vents should be cleaned. Washing machine hoses should be checked for wear and tear. Furnace filters need to be cleaned or replaced. Refrigerator condenser coils need to be vacuumed.
